In spite of limiting mechanical properties and the necessity for complex
ESF frames, the Kirschner-Ehmer fixator has a well-documented history in
veterinary orthopaedics. This device is familiar to most veterinarians worldwide
who have learned how to overcome its limitations. However, the resulting
frame complexity and hardware requirements make the KE less favorable
economically, mechanically, and clinically than the SK™ ESF System
by IMEX™.Due to the widespread history and availability of KE components, IMEX™ Veterinary, Inc. continues to produce this fixator. In fact, our original small, medium, and large INTERFACE™ and CENTERFACE™ pins were developed specifically for KE pin-gripping clamps. KE clamps are available in “Single” (rod-to-pin) and “Double” (rod-to-rod) versions. Double KE clamps are recommended for articulations and IM pin-fixator “tie-in” applications, but are not recommended for load-bearing applications.
Small KE Components
Utilizes 1/8” diameter stainless steel external rods and accepts 3/32” and
5/64” fixation pin shanks. Some consider 1/16” pins acceptable
if proper patient selection is considered. Clamps, bolts, and nuts are stainless
steel. Wrench flats are 1/4”.

Medium KE Components
Utilizes 3/16” diameter stainless steel external rods and accepts 1/8” and 7/64” shank fixation pins. Clamps, nuts, and bolts are stainless steel. Wrench flats are 5/16”. The medium KE device is considered the workhorse of the KE sizes due to its application to a wide variety of patients; however, application to medium and large patients requires the use of full-pins and complicated frames to achieve consistent patient management with minimum morbidity. Additionally, medium KE rods work well for making articulations with SK™ single clamps in large SK™ ESF frames. Many surgeons include medium KE rods in their large SK™ kit for this purpose.
