DuraFace® Full-pins for Large Animals
DuraFace® full-pins are a significant improvement compared to historically used positive-profile pins. These pins feature a larger shaft on the “near” end of the pin and a tapered run-out junction at the thread-shaft junction to attenuate any potential stress riser, resulting in a pin with increased bending resistance and enhanced cyclic fatigue life compared to positive-profile pins (Vet Comp Orthop Traumatol 2011; 4: 257-261.).
These pins along with related drill bits and taps are designed for lower limb application in large animal patients. Typically, fiberglass casting is used to incorporate the pins and hoof. Both pin sizes incorporate three chuck flats on the blunt end for securing the pin into a Jacobs chuck. Pre-drilling and tapping are required.
These DuraFace® full-pins represent improved replacements for historically used traditional positive-profile pins 21140 and 2131LA. Both sizes of the new DuraFace® full-pins are compatible with the same drill bits and taps previously used.

When applying the pin consider the larger end with the TRO™ feature for application to the most stressed side of the repair, often considered to be the medial side of the equine cannon bone.
